Reading
At Dee Point Primary School, we have a systematic and consistent whole school approach to reading whilst ensuring children develop a love and passion for reading. Through the use of Steps to read, which link to our wider curriculum, the children are exposed to a wide range of texts: fiction, non-fiction and poetry. It is our intent that all children will leave primary school reading a range of texts fluently and with confidence across a range of subjects in preparation for High School. At Dee Point we endeavor to:
- provide all children with beautiful texts that deepen curriculum knowledge
- encourage an enthusaism for reading and enjoyment of books
- develop a rich and varied vocabulary
- provide all children with necessary skills to become confident, fluent readers who can demonstrate an understanding of what they have read
At Dee Point, we use Steps To Read which provides a clear teaching sequence to reading sessions that explicitly teach reading skills and strategies in a cumulative way through evidence-based approaches from EYFS to Year 6. In order to achieve our Intent we implement the following:
- children take part in whole class reading lessons, guided reading lessons and phonic lessons
- use of engaging texts that foster a love of reading
- use sequenced, coherant and progressive planning
- use language rich texts for vocabulary teaching
We firmly believe reading goes beyond statatory assessments and that the main impact of reading lessons at Dee Point will ensure that the children leave us with an appreciation of reading and the skills to ensure that they will be able to use what they have learnt in their further education. children will:
- be confident, fluent readers who show an understanding of what they have read
- be able to demonstrate the skills they have been taught
- be able to apply their reading skills to a range of subjects
