Apollo 2022 - 2023
Mr Martin
Welcome to Apollo
Our class is full of 10 legends - 6 children and 4 adults. The ethos of the classroom is based on developing positive, open and honest relationships. We recognise that managing 'big feelings' is not always easy, so we try to create an environment where these feelings are validated and we have strategies which positively react to these emotions.
Our curriculum is delivered in a way that supports our needs academically, socially and emotionally. Within our class learning is broken down into shorter sessions; we have regular sensory breaks; we use multisensory approaches to support engagement; we have a visual class timetable; have seating and soft furnishings to ensure we are comfortable and relaxed; and we are able to use different strategies to help regulate our emotions and feelings.
During the morning, we complete Reading, Maths and Writing. These lessons are split into a carousel of activities which means we get lots of 1:1 attention, but also have the opportunity to rehearse the core skills that we will need in the future. Furthermore, we spend a lot of time learning about the needs of children and adults with Sensory Processing challenges, Autism, Anxiety and ADHD. As a result, we understand how we are unique and what challenges each other face. We then follow the ‘Zones of Regulation’ which help us to recognise the feelings we have and develop strategies to manage these.
In the afternoon, we work on different topic areas including Space, Our Body, Romans and Natural Disasters, as well as Computing and PE. Finally, we undertake Outdoor Learning activities to help us appreciate and look after our environment.
